At Boone’s Red Onions, we make delicious pickled red onions that will add complexity and color to any meal.
What's up with this little icon? My partner and I created this to show that Boone's Red Onions is proudly owned and operated by a trans person (me!). I worked as an advocate in the LGBTQ community for years. I saw the ways LGBTQ people, and especially trans and gender-nonconforming people, are constantly discriminated against in employment. This is happening despite laws that are supposed to protect us. Witnessing this and experiencing this, I realized that entrepreneurship is a key to empowering the transgender community. My dream is that someday Boone's Red Onions will grow to employ a diverse staff and will be able to support other trans entrepreneurs.
3% of our total profits each year will go to an organization working with the transgender community. 10% of profits from our Tangy Lime Red Onions go to supporting the LGBTQ+ Honduran community. - Christopher Boone |
We are part of an incubator program for local small food businesses run by a regional nonprofit, the Alchemist CDC. Boone's Red Onions has benefitted hugely from the support and network we gain as part of Alchemist's programs! We are one of 13 businesses in the incubator. Alchemist CDC staff works closely (and tirelessly!) with us to develop our businesses, build assets, and achieve our benchmarks towards business stability and sustainability. We also work out of a shared kitchen managed by Alchemist CDC in North Sacramento at 882 El Camino Avenue. To learn more about Alchemist, click here: https://alchemistcdc.org/incubator/
